It's been almost a year ago today since DC producer/emcee Oddisee last visited us in-studio, so we figured it was about that time to get him back in here. He'll be in tonight to speak about his new Diamond District project with X.O. and yU, and a plethora of other dope things he's got on the horizon. Also, it's ladies night! TUNE INNNNNNN!!!!

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

One of the most anticipated projects of the year has finally arrived, courtesy of the fine folks at Inner Loop Records. A full recreation of Jay-Z's classic album Reasonable Doubt, featuring some of the top hip-hop talent in the DC/MD/VA area. *Most* of these artists came out last Thursday at Expo here in DC to perform their remixes, with DJ Alizay on the tables tearing down the building. Congratulations to Inner Loop....now we'll just sit back and wait. Which classic album is next? Full tracklist and download below.

MP3: Cayan & Pro'Verb - Friend or Foe 09

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

Last night on Funkadelic Freestyles Radio, we gave y'all five snippets from Inner Loop Records' Reasonable Doubt Remix Project. Featuring Best Kept Secret, X.O., K-Beta, Lyriciss, Judah, Mark Henry, The Package, and many more. We also premiered this full joint, "Friend or Foe 09," which is produced by Mark Henry and features lyrics from Cayan and Pro'Verb. Thanks to Overok, you can now download it.

MP3: Q-Tip - We Fight, We Love (Remix feat. Kanye West & Consequence)

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

You can call me late or whatever, but that's not really important to me anymore with all the other blogs we "compete" with (chuckle). This song is just vital, simply put. Consider the whole hip-hop needing an IV analogy when you play this joint; Kanye ISN'T auto-tuning, Consequence is spitting, and the truth is Tip made one of the best albums of last year. I can't guarantee that this little remix is the start of a turnaround in the mainstream, (yes, I know...Asher, Charles, and Cudi are turning heads, but they're still "indie"), but it's definitely a good move. Shouts to the NMC who personally received an email from Q-Tip containing the MP3.

3.24.09: FF 036 - Inner Loop Takeover

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

It's true; we're back. After a one week break (much-needed), Funkadelic Freestyles is back on the air tonight with a very special show. The good folks from the DC-based Inner Loop Records will make the first ever appearance in-studio to promote their spectacular event this Thursday at Expo. In case you haven't heard: Overok, J-$crilla, Infinit, and K-Beta got on the line with a rack of area artists to initiate an entire remix project devoted to recreating each song from Jay-Z's classic debut album, Reasonable Doubt. While most of the artists from the project will be at Expo in two days to perform, we're gonna give you the inside scoop on the studio tracks tonight on the show.

Of course, our resident DJ Jerome Baker III will be in the house with new music and Jay Promo, King Carter, Unkle Scooty, Akhil, and myself will be providing obnoxious commentary from 8-9pm. We've got a pretty dope announcement early on, so make sure you logged on at 8! Peace!

MP3: Wale - Chillin' (feat. Lady Gaga) [CDQ]

It's been quite the trip since DC rapper Wale first burst onto the scene. Many of you have been following him since
"1 Thing About A Player" premiered on the DC airwaves courtesy of Southeast Slim and his fine-tuned go-go sampled hip-hop. Or you were a little late like me and you got your first taste with the 100 Miles and Running mixtape - the brilliant project from Wale, Mark Ronson, Nick Catchdubs, and many others. Perhaps you're like my high school friends who discovered the "Nike Boots" video and were instantly hooked. Regardless of your Wale experience, it's about to get much better. Just under an hour ago, the Interscope recording artist visited DC radio station 93.9 WKYS to premiere the new single, "Chillin (feat. Lady Gaga)," from his debut album, Attention: Deficit, dropping this summer. UPDATE Here's a CDQ, courtesy of YN.

MP3: Danny! - Wanderland (Remix)

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

Last May, we brought you new music from the South Carolina producer/emcee Danny! featuring our good friend Che Grand. After releasing his psuedo-soundtrack And I Love H.E.R. completely on his own, he garnered critical acclaim (see above) and caught the interest of the Definitive Jux indie label. Before he signed, he even considered retirement, but now Danny! is back with the first single off his new Def Jux album. It's called "Just Friends," and you can buy it below. But being the kind artist he is, he just sent me the B-side from the single, "Wanderland (Remix)." Stay on the lookout as I'm sure we'll be back with more Danny! news soon.

PODCAST: FF 035 - X.O.

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

Here's the podcast from Tuesday, March 10th, 2009. I was tremendously sick so I barely had a voice. Hilarity ensued. Easily our most janked-out podcast of the new year. Stay tuned for the tracklist later tonight. Shouts to Jerome Baker III for killing it and X.O., Benji, and Toney for ripping the cypher (see pt. 2).

MP3: Diamond District (Oddisee, X.O., & Y.U.) - Who I Be

It just seems to be the week for DC's top tier to come out with their new material (Wale, Tabi Bonney, and now, Oddisee and friends). Okay, let's a drop a little education for a second here. Oddisee is a part of the Low Budget crew, which also includes DC emcee/producers like Kenn Starr, Kev Brown, and Roddy Rod. Last time I checked, X.O. and Y.U. are unofficial members following Oddisee's classic beat on X.O.'s "Rid'n" and YU's monster remix of the song featuring Wale. So the incredible talent of Oddisee, X.O., and Y.U. form Diamond District, a super group of epic proportions. Get to know the three members above, and get acquainted with their music - via the first single - below.

VIDEO: Tabi Bonney - Rich Kids

Here's the actual video for "Rich Kids," the first single of Tabi Bonney's album dope. We gave you the preview last week, now here's the real thing. Produced by Ski. Shouts to OKP for the premiere.

MP3: Wale - Word Play (feat. Curren$y & Tre of UCB)

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

This new one from Wale, from his upcoming Back To The Feature mixtape, is straight spit. This could be for two reasons: (1) The hot spitta himself, Curren$y, comes through with the assist on the second verse. (2) This is a 9th Wonder beat, y'all. You HAVE to be spitting. Anyway, Wale Week is in full effect; on Monday he announced the album title (Attention: Deficit) and yesterday he announced the release date Back To The Feature (April 29th). Be prepared for Friday ("Chillin'" - his new single featuring Lady GaGa - premieres on the net). Until then, enjoy "Word Play."

VIDEO: Dujeous - Break Bread

While I was pestering Donwill of Tanya Morgan on Twitter for an mp3 for his single "Laura's Song" (of which we posted the video this past weekend), Apex from the NYC band Dujeous totally surprised me on the reply tip with the video for their new single "Break Bread." Then it hit me! This was the same band that created the jam-tastic single "Pro Choice" with John Legend and brilliantly remixed Lily Allen's smash "Smile." They're coming back with their sophomore album Day In Day Out - a project they say is "leaps and bounds ahead" of their first album City Limits. So the message is clear: don't sleep on Dujeous (doo-jee-us).

MP3: N.A.S.A. - The Mayor (feat. Ghostface Killah, The Cool Kids, Scarface, & DJ AM)

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

So in case any of you guys were wondering, this is not jben.ok
, world famous host of Funkadelic Freestyles. Making my blogging debut, this is Akhil, aka The Brown Wonda, aka the random guy who reads the news on the show. For my first blog I decided to write a little something on this album I came across a little while ago. I don't know how many of you guys are on okayplayer, I myself have kinda slowed down on the boards, but last week I decided to go on and I came across a review of this album The Spirit of Apollo by these two Cali DJ's, together called N.A.S.A. The album features over 40 guests, with everyone from Method Man to Scarface to The Pharcyde. This particular cut is especially dope, hope you guys enjoy it.

MP3: Nando McFlyy. - Get It Right (prod. by Best Kept Secret)

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

New music from DC's own Nando McFlyy., who's sporting quite the interesting mop on his head in the picture above. Regardless of his hairstyle, this new joint produced by Best Kept Secret (whaddup Tone and Craig!) GOES. Excuse my slang - it's just that this song has that perfect go-go/hip-hop formula that BKS are known for. Let's hope we see another mixtape from Mr. McFlyy sometime in the near future...

VIDEO: Donwill - Laura's Song

Back in January, Donwill of Tanya Morgan visited our studios to talk about his group but more importantly, his solo career. He came to DC alone for inauguration, so I figured we'd let him have the spotlight for the evening. It turns out he has a lot on his plate and one of those upcoming projects is about to come out. Donwill will be Don Cusack for an entire album called High Fidelity, based on the 2000 pop-culture film starring John Cusack and Jack Black. Don's rapping friends will join him on the album as characters from the movie including Che Grand as Jack Black [Barry] and Von Pea as Todd Louiso [Dick]. Here's the superb video for "Laura's Song," starring Jasika Nicole from Fox's hit show Fringe.

VIDEO: AB The Producer - Go Hard (feat. X.O., Pro'Verb, & Lyriciss)

Directed by yours truly, jben.ok, along with a little help from my man Chris. And I can't forget to mention that the homie Phil from Studio 43 edited the joint, and really made it what it is. Hope you enjoy it y'all!

PODCAST: FF 034 -AB The Producer x Eddie & E Major

MP3: Tanya Morgan - So Damn Down

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

Finally! The hip hop group Tanya Morgan has returned with the lead single "So Damn Down" from their new full-length LP Brooklynati. The hook is bananas and needs to be on the radio (but how to get it there, is the question). In case you missed it, this song features the verse that TM's Donwill spit for us on the radio last month when he visited our studios (please DL that podcast, if you haven't already). Look for Brooklynati to drop May 12th on Interdependent Media, and click here to visit the fictitious' city Chamber of Commerce!

MP3: Oddisee - Hip Hop's Cool Again

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

Last night as I was scrambling around the studio to fill some time before Jerome Baker III arrived on the decks, I revisited Oddisee 101, the album that the DC rapper/producer released for free a year or so ago. Since then, he's aligned with the indie label Mello Music, who put Oddisee 101 on disc and on iTunes. This newest joint, "Hip Hop's Cool Again," will be featured on the Mello Music compilation Mental Liberation, due out in May. The song is a hip hop purist's take on reinventing the true elements in a watered-down culture. Shouts to Peter Rosenberg and be sure to be on the lookout for the first single off the new Diamond District project, featuring Oddisee, X.O., and yU.

3.10.09: FF 035 - X.O.

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

Gotta keep this short: tonight's show will feature X.O. live in-studio to promote his new mixtape/album, Realmatic, which dropped yesterday. I would have had it up earlier but I had midterms. (Can you believe Real Mango Juice had that joint before us? Jeesh.) Tune in tonight; regular cast of characters with Jay Promo, King Carter, Jerome Baker III, Akhil, and myself. I may or may not have a voice.

MP3: Camp Lo - Regulate (feat. Yahzarah)

Image Hosting by Picoodle.com

I'm sick and I'm lying in bed feeling completely unmotivated. I'm trying to make it out to the Foreign Exchange show tonight in DC at The Black Cat, but the fact that I have a severe case of the spins without alcohol may or may not hold me back. Believe it or not, I'm posting again...although you probably won't see much content next week because of the three midterms I have to take before going home for a week. Once I'm home (March 13th), the posting will be on a hundred thousand...you get it. I felt compelled to post this because (1) it's produced by Apple Juice Kid, (2) Camp Lo has the new Stone and Rob: Caught on Tape mixtape coming out on March 24th, (3) and because it features the wonderful Yahzarah, who will be performing with Phonte and Nicolay tonight here in the district. Enjoy, my friends; this is a MONSTER record. Shouts to the NMC for the laink.

VIDEO: Tabi Bonney - Rich Kids (Preview)

Our good friend Tabi Bonney is still riding high after the release of his new album, dope, which is only the first installment in the trilogy dope fresh superstar. To keep the buzz going, he's releasing a video for his super-successful single "Rich Kids," which I *think* he directed himself. Last night here in DC he premiered the video at a private screening, of which there is footage here. The actual music video won't be available online until at least next week. Tabi was kind enough to record a quick drop for us (he even admitted he DOESN'T freestyle, lol). If you're interested, you can catch a very brief sneak peak of the visuals right here.

3.3.09: FF 034 - AB The Producer x E Major & Eddie

Big show tonight, big show. Jay Promo, King Carter, Akhil, and myself will joined by Jerome Baker The 3rd on the 1s and 2s for an evening of new music and two interviews. First, we'll welcome DC's own AB The Producer in-studio to promote his new mixtape, Producer's Credit. [See the video above for a song off the tape and an interview from kookoutkris.com] Later on, FF alum E Major and the producer Eddie will make the trek down from Baltimore to promote Eddie's new album, Sound Wandering, featuring E Major, Kev Brown, and Cy Young

Be sure to tune in, and continue to spread the word regarding the radio show. This Friday we'll be having a special edition at 4pm with The Foreign Exchange live in-studio (Phonte, Nicolay, Zo!, Yahzarah, AND Darien Brockington!). Next Tuesday, X.O. will be in to promote his new album, Realmatic. And in three weeks, Inner Loop Records will TAKE OVER Funkadelic Freestyles in support of their Reasonable Doubt Remix Project (whaddup Overok!)
